Have you ever wanted something so bad, but just couldn’t quite seem to reach the thing to make it your own? Yeah, me too.

Over the past 4 years, I tried so hard to understand the fiber/needle crafting industry. I made friends, networked, worked on my craft/artistic style, started a blog, released patterns, got patterns published in magazines, and the list goes on. It seemed the more I achieved, the closer and the further away I got from every other goal! I often found myself wanting to give up on a creative self-established career because my growth needed improvement, and no matter how hard I tried to avoid niching down… I HAD to pick a lane and stay in it.

So, where do so I go from here? What do I do to keep myself motivated to keep showing up in these spaces as authentically as possible? At the beginning of 2021 I didn’t have the answers to these questions. But I did know how to pray, meditate, and create peace in my journey. So I did that, and there was a noticeable shift by the Sum 21. I was nearing the debut of my first collab with my favorite family owned fiber brand, Lion Brand. For YEARS I dreamt of being “a cool blogger with a monthly contract,” making designs for Lion Brand kits. I’ve looked up to and been inspired by many indie designers featured across their website and social media platforms. Getting the opportunity to work with Lion Brand in any fashion was a dream come true, but it was just a hint at what could be! I knew I wanted more than just a square.

If you’re not aware, I designed 1 of 12 unique squares for 2021 Traveling Afghan Knit Blanket! Find my FREE pattern contribution here on the blog, or purchase the pattern for $1 to gain access to a reference chart! This singular opportunity planted the seed that I KNEW I would one day have my own kit with Lion Brand. One way or another I was going to make it happen! My “Hugs” Square pattern went live in September, and here we are on Black Friday 2021 (2 months later) celebrating my 1st kit with Lion Brand.

Let me say this, no I’m still not “a cool blogger with any kind of consistent contract.” I’m a cool versatile version of myself. Now that I’ve landed my first kit I know how to do it again, when I’m ready. What I learned this past year is what I think I want I may not be ready or available for, but I will eventually align with the opportunities I need for my growth as an individual/designer/artist/etc.

• My lifestyle doesn’t accommodate designing 24/7 or producing new work monthly.

• This process has taught me to go back to what I know, dust off and reimagine works I didn’t give a chance.

• Fund myself whenever I can until I’m dripping with sponsorships and monetary compensation to match.

• Create a seat at my own table however I see fit and at my own pace.

With that being mentioned, I’m so proud to introduce, Regina Blanket Scarf!

Regina Blanket Scarf is the culmination of everything it took for me to get to the kit!

Fun fact: the first of these scarves was made back in 2019. This design spent 2 years collecting dust in my mind as a pattern, and the original is tucked away with other makes.

I used Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in multiple colors for the first. The second was made with Mandala Watercolor; Icy Grape. Time may have passed, the fibers may have changed, but the love for Lion Brand fibers and making this a kit with that brand never changed. The pattern design would eventually be named after mom. She taught me how to crochet!

I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her planting the seed of handmade creation in my life. The color way I made the kit sample out of gives me all kinds of amethyst vibes, and that was my mother’s birthstone. The squish and drape factor make the wearer feel royal, and Regina means Queen! These factors alone gave me all the motivation to dedicate this design to my late mother. I know she’s looking down on me doing her best non-rhythmic proud mom happy dance from Heaven! And I couldn’t be more proud of myself than I am RIGHT NOW!

Ya girl has shed more than a few tears of joy, has pat herself on the back more times than one can count, and has had a praise dance moment or two. I give thanks to God for guiding my steps and helping me shed all the second-guessing and self doubt. I also thank each of you who takes the time to read my blogs, interacts on social media, supports my work, and sends me genuine encouragement daily! Words can’t express how amazing this moment is, and how grateful I am to be able to share it with each of you!
