Something about weather warming up and summer approaching makes me tune my maker mind to hats and bags(containers). Maybe it’s the “spring cleaning bug” or the urge to be outside that does it for me. I get excited at the thought of having an excuse to use various cottons and raffia yarn. Last year I recognized I had developed a seasonal obsession with hats and bags. This year hadn’t been any different. This past April was the start of the journey to “Summer Vibes!”

I love it when a plan comes together, but this design didn’t come together the way other hats had for me in the past. There was a crazy amount of trial and error in making sure it was a combination of stitches that would make for an enjoyable, stylish, and seasonally appropriate hat. I thought it might be a bad idea to upgrade my first bucket hat pattern(Sunnyside Bucket Hat), thinking people would call me a lazy designer. The joke was on me! Going back to my original bucket hat put me on track to designing another bucket that’s completely different from the first. I took that as a lesson in how letting false narratives and the opinions of strangers stall my growth.

With all of the nonsense and fine tuning out of the way, it was time to get to the making. But before we make the things we need yarn, right?! That’s when Lion Brand came in to save the day and my stash! Special thanks to Lion Brand for supporting this pattern and sponsoring the yarn so that I may share it with you for FREE! Choose your size based on your head circumference. Size medium will fit the average 22”/55cm head. If your head is larger make a large. If your head is smaller make a small. If you’re in between sizes it’ll probably be best to make the next size up depending on how snug or loose you’d like your hat to fit. If you don’t have a lot of long/thick hair then you can probably get away with sizing down. The beauty in this design is it’s unisex. It’ll look good on anyone, making it perfect for gifting!

This pattern is considered intermediate, although a confident beginner will do fine! Starting from a magic ring you’ll work in a series of increase rounds of HDC. Next, you’ll work the height of the crown with WC texture, and end with the brim. The brim consists of alternating rounds of HDC and FPHDC to mimic the traditional flared top stitch look of a sewn bucket hat. Please pay attention to how to finish each round in order to ensure you achieve an overall seamless look and the desired finish.

NOTES

This pattern starts from a magic ring and is worked from crown to brim in one piece. You will work in continuous spiraling rounds. DO NOT do any of the following unless instructed otherwise: slip stitch to join rounds, turn your work, chain to start new rounds. This pattern is written for an average ADULT size Small-20”/50.8cmcm, Medium,-22”/55.88cm, & Large-24”/60.96cm.
